I have learned that in this walk of faith, not everything is as it seems. People smile, but their hearts may be full of deception. An opportunity may appear golden, yet it carries the weight of destruction. A voice may sound like God, but if you listen closely, it contradicts His Word. The older I get in my journey with Christ, the more I realize that one of the greatest gifts a believer can possess is the gift of discernment.
I remember a time early in my ministry when I nearly fell into the hands of a manipulative person. They came with a smooth tongue, quoting scripture, saying all the right things, and presenting themselves as a divine helper for my calling. On the surface, everything seemed perfect—too perfect. But deep in my spirit, I felt an uneasiness, a restlessness that I couldn’t explain. My natural mind wanted to ignore it, to reason it away. “Maybe I’m just being overly cautious,” I told myself. But as I prayed, the Lord whispered, “Test the spirits.”
That’s when I turned to 1 John 4:1 (NKJV):
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
I prayed for clarity, and as time went on, this individual began to reveal their true nature. They weren’t sent to help me; they were sent to hinder me. Their words and actions began to show inconsistencies, and before long, they made a decision that exposed their true motives. I shuddered to think what would have happened if I had ignored the Holy Spirit’s warning.
What is the Gift of Discernment?
Discernment is the ability to perceive the truth behind a matter, to see beyond the surface and recognize what is of God and what is not. It is not suspicion, nor is it paranoia. It is a supernatural insight given by the Holy Spirit to help believers navigate the complexities of life, relationships, and spiritual warfare. 1 Corinthians 12:10 lists “the discerning of spirits” as one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This means that some believers have a heightened ability to detect spiritual influences—whether divine, demonic, or human flesh.
I have come to realize that discernment is not just a luxury; it is a necessity. In a world filled with deception, half-truths, and cunning spirits, we cannot afford to rely solely on our human understanding. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV) reminds us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
There are doors that look like blessings but are actually traps. There are people who look like angels but are wolves in sheep’s clothing. And without discernment, many fall into the snares of the enemy.
Discernment in Everyday Life
I have met people who believe that discernment is only for church settings, for identifying false prophets or counterfeit spiritual manifestations. But let me tell you, discernment is needed in every area of life. It is needed in choosing friends, in making business deals, in selecting a marriage partner, in raising children, in responding to conflicts, and even in deciding what to watch and listen to.
I recall a woman in our church who was about to enter into a business partnership. Everything seemed to be lining up—her potential partner was promising great profits, the contract terms seemed reasonable, and excitement filled the air. But before she could sign, she felt an uneasiness in her spirit. She prayed and fasted for clarity, and soon after, the Lord exposed fraudulent activities that her potential partner had been involved in. She walked away, and a few months later, she discovered that the man had been arrested for financial fraud.
Discernment saved her.
How to Sharpen the Gift of Discernment
Many people ask me, “How do I develop discernment?” The truth is, discernment is cultivated in intimacy with God. The closer you walk with Him, the more you begin to see with His eyes.
- Stay Rooted in the Word
The more you read the Bible, the more you align with God’s truth. Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV) says:
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
When you are filled with the Word, you can easily detect when something is not in alignment with God’s will.
- Develop a Strong Prayer Life
Discernment is sharpened in the secret place. When you spend time in prayer, you become more sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
- Listen to the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is our guide. John 16:13 (NKJV) says:
“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
- Test the Spirits
Not everything that looks spiritual is from God. Not every opportunity is a blessing. Not every voice speaking into your life is sent by God. Always test the spirits, compare them with scripture, and ask God for confirmation.
- Be Humble and Teachable
Discernment grows when you remain humble before God. Pride can blind you, but a humble heart remains open to correction and divine instruction. So, my friends, I have learned that discernment is not just about identifying what is wrong, but also about recognizing what is right. It helps us see the hand of God in situations we may not understand. It helps us recognize divine connections and the right timing for decisions. It protects us, guides us, and strengthens our walk with the Lord.
If you find yourself constantly falling into deception, making poor choices, or being easily misled, ask God to sharpen your discernment. Pray for wisdom, seek His voice, and remain anchored in His Word. The more you grow in discernment, the more victorious and peaceful your walk with Christ will be.
I pray that the Lord opens your eyes and grants you the spirit of discernment, that you may walk in wisdom and truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
