I woke up in a cold sweat, my heart racing, the dream still vivid in my mind. I had just seen a close friend weeping at the graveside of their child. The tiny coffin was being lowered into the ground, and the weight of sorrow in the air was unbearable. It felt so real—too real. I could hear the cries, feel the grief, and sense the deep loss. But as I sat up in bed, catching my breath, I knew one thing for sure—this was no ordinary dream. It was a vision, a spiritual message, and I needed to discern what God was saying.
Dreams are not just figments of our imagination. They are one of the most common ways God speaks to His people. Job 33:14-15 (NKJV) reminds us:
“For God may speak in one way, or in another, yet man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while slumbering on their beds.”
The Bible is full of divine messages given through dreams—Joseph’s dreams in Genesis, Pharaoh’s troubling visions, Nebuchadnezzar’s symbolic images, and even warnings given to the wise men about Herod’s evil schemes. Dreams are spiritual languages, and if we are not spiritually alert, we may miss the warnings, the revelations, or the instructions they carry.
So, what does it mean when you dream of a friend losing their child? And what should you do about it?
The Meaning Behind the Dream
A child, in spiritual symbolism, often represents something precious—a new beginning, a promise, a destiny, a ministry, or even a gift from God. When a dream involves the death and burial of a child, it can signify the loss of something significant in a person’s life. It could mean the death of a dream, an attack on their destiny, or a season of sorrow approaching.
When I had that dream, my immediate reaction was not fear, but urgency. I knew that dreams of death do not always mean physical death. More often than not, they symbolize spiritual attacks, setbacks, or losses that the enemy is planning to bring upon someone’s life. John 10:10 (NKJV) tells us:
“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”
The enemy is always plotting destruction, and sometimes God, in His mercy, allows us to see the plans of darkness ahead of time so that we may intercede and cancel them.
A Call to Intercession, Not Fear
When I woke up from that dream, I didn’t rush to call my friend in panic. I didn’t run to them shouting, “I had a terrible dream about your child!” No. I knew that spiritual matters must be handled spiritually.
The first thing I did was to pray. I took authority in the name of Jesus, declaring that whatever the enemy had planned against that child and their family would be nullified and overturned. Isaiah 54:17 (NKJV) says:
“No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn.”
This was my battle verse. The enemy had formed a weapon, but God had given me authority to condemn it in the spirit before it could manifest in the physical realm.
I fasted and prayed for three days, standing in the gap for my friend and their family. Ezekiel 22:30 (NKJV) says:
“So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.”
I refused to be one of those who saw a vision and did nothing.
Understanding the Spiritual Battle
Dreams of death, especially concerning children, are often spiritual attacks aimed at cutting off destinies before they manifest. This is not new. In Exodus, Pharaoh ordered the killing of Hebrew baby boys to stop the rise of a deliverer. In Matthew 2, Herod did the same in an attempt to kill Jesus before His mission could begin.
When the enemy sees a bright destiny, he attacks early. He tries to abort spiritual gifts, kill divine callings, and delay or destroy God’s plans. That’s why when you see such dreams, you must act with urgency.
The Importance of Discernment
Not all dreams come from God. Some are demonic manipulations, while others are simply the result of our own subconscious fears and thoughts. This is why we must seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance in interpreting them. 1 Corinthians 2:14 (NKJV) tells us:
“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
As I prayed about my dream, the Holy Spirit gave me a deeper revelation. It wasn’t just about my friend’s child—it was about an attack on their entire family. There was a pattern of early deaths and lost opportunities that needed to be broken. The dream was a call to stand in the gap and break generational curses that had plagued their bloodline for years.
What Should You Do When You Have a Similar Dream?
- Do Not Fear – Fear is the enemy’s greatest weapon. If you panic, you give room to doubt and confusion. Instead, stand firm in faith.
- Pray Immediately – Don’t wait until morning. Wake up and rebuke any negative plans of the enemy.
- Fast and Intercede – Some breakthroughs only come through prayer and fasting (Mark 9:29). Dedicate time to cover the person in prayer.
- Seek Confirmation from God – Ask the Holy Spirit for deeper revelation. Was it a warning? A call to repentance? A sign of something spiritual?
- Speak Life and Cancel the Dream – Declare life over the person in the dream. Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) says: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Speak life!
- If Led, Share with the Person – But do so wisely. Don’t instill fear. Instead, encourage them to pray and stay close to God.
Victory Through Christ
After praying and fasting for my friend, I felt a release in my spirit. The burden lifted. A few days later, I called them and asked how things were going. To my amazement, they shared how they had narrowly escaped a terrible accident while traveling. Their child had been in the car, and the enemy’s plan had been to take their life—but God intervened!
That is the power of standing in the gap. That is why God shows us things in dreams—not to scare us, but to equip us for battle.
If you’ve ever had a similar dream, do not ignore it. Take action in prayer. The spiritual realm is real, but as believers, we have been given authority in the name of Jesus to cancel every evil plan and establish the will of God.
So today, I urge you: Be watchful. Be prayerful. Be discerning. God is always speaking. The question is—are you listening?
Amen!
